Turkish president confirmed going to the G20 Summit in November, in Rio; the 2 leaders also addressed the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine
The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke by telephone this Thursday (May 9, 2024) with the President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan. In the conversation, the Turkish leader showed solidarity with the victims of Rio Grande do Sul.
Lula thanked Erdogan for the letter sent about the situation in the State. In the document, the president of Turkey paid condolences to the relatives of the victims, the PT member and the Brazilian nation, and wished recovery to those injured in the tragedy.
“With deep regret, I learned of the loss of many human lives and the damage caused by the floods and landslides in Rio Grande do Sul. On behalf of Turkey, I would like to express our solidarity with the Brazilian nation at this difficult time. Taking this opportunity, I extend my sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims, Your Excellency and the friendly Brazilian nation, on behalf of my nation and on my own behalf, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”he wrote.
In the conversation, Erdogan also confirmed that he will come to Brazil for the G20 Summit (a group formed by the 19 largest economies in the world plus the European Union), on November 18 and 19, in Rio. At the event, he must meet in person with Lula .
The Brazilian and Turkish presidents also discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip and the war between Russia and Ukraine.
According to Palácio do Planalto, both “expressed affinity in their positions” on peace negotiations and on defending a ceasefire in the 2 conflicts. The leaders also advocated the creation of an independent State of Palestine.
