São Paulo, 24 – Excess humidity hampered the completion of the soybean harvest in the northern half of Rio Grande do Sul, reported the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Emater). “Even in regions where rainfall was lower, the soils remain saturated with moisture, damaging activity”, he explained in a note.
The harvested area in the State reached 91% – the remaining 9% of the crop is maturing.
“In harvest areas, in addition to losses due to germinated grains, moldy grains and natural threshing, which increase with each day of delay, costs have been high due to harvesting in wet soil, leading to the partial use of bulk carriers, due to the excess weight, to avoid damage to mobility”, highlighted Emater.
According to the company, the delivery of soybeans to the drying and storage units is also compromised, “due to the high humidity of the grains, often close to 30%”. “For adequate storage, it is necessary to reduce humidity to around 14%, but the capacity of the dryers is limited. Cooperatives with reception units in the Central and Campanha regions have transported the grains to dry them at their headquarters located in the Middle Plateau, due to the high demand for time and firewood for combustion at the harvest sites,” he said.
The assessment is that in crops implemented later, whose cycle ended a few days ago, the rate of damaged or germinated grains is lower.
The initially projected productivity estimate was 3,329 kilos per hectare, but it should be lower, depending on the results of the surveys being carried out.
Corn
In the case of corn harvesting, work advanced 4 percentage points compared to the previous week, reaching 92% of the cultivated area.
“Unharvested crops (6% in maturation and 2% in grain filling) begin to show senescence, fungi – with a high risk of developing mycotoxins – and germination in ears, which generates a certain urgency to remove the crop from the field.
The cultivation area is estimated at 812,795 hectares, and current productivity at 6,464 kg/ha, with a possibility of reduction, as a result of loss surveys, which are in progress”, said Emater.
Rice
Rice harvesting has resumed and covers 95% of the area. According to the Emater report, the losses caused by the submersion of mature crops and the lodging of plants are consolidated, leading many producers to abandon the remaining areas.
The area cultivated with rice in the State is estimated at 900,203 hectares, according to the Rio Grandense do Arroz Institute (Irga).
Productivity was initially estimated at 8,325 kg/ha, but is expected to suffer a reduction after the survey of losses that is being carried out, highlights Emater.
