At the young age of 4, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary -Queen Elizabeth II- received a Shetland pony as a gift from her grandfather, King George V. At the same time she would awaken a great passion for horses, she would become an expert rider, he would win the Estimate Gold Cup at Ascot – the most prestigious long-distance race in England – and he would even negotiate state affairs with presidents of different countries on top of a horse.
At that time, in 1920 to be exact, the Englishman was born, son of a jockey -rider of racehorses-, Richard S. Francis, better known as Dick Fransis, who would become champion of the British National horse races. Hunt and jockey of the queen mother, mother of Elizabeth II.
After a serious fall in 1957, Dick went from being a practitioner of the sport of horseback to a well-known and successful writer of suspense novels related to that sport. He first published his autobiography, The Sport of Queens -El Deporte de Reinas-, later in 1962 he wrote Dead Cert and in 1964 the work Nerve, novels that according to comments were among the favorites of Queen Elizabeth II.
After winning 350 races, writing 42 novels, selling more than 60 million books worldwide and 16 years as an equestrian journalist, Dick Francis passed away on February 14, 2010. His death was mourned by many and especially by Queen Elizabeth II, according to Buckingham Palace.
Sadly, on September 8 at 11:30 a.m., the official twitter account @RoyalFamily published the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96. The world will miss the great monarch who reigned for 70 years and was a key player in transforming the United Kingdom into a more just, egalitarian, democratic society, a huge financial system with global openness and full humanitarian support for the poorest and most vulnerable population.
She will also be missed by her precious Thoroughbreds, her favorite horse Merlin and her most successful, 100% race winner, Elector, a pride of the monarch. There were more than 451 victories over three decades, moments and memories that remain in history.
Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth.
