GP Miami, Leclerc one tenth behind Max in Sprint Qualifying
With the second position in the Sprint Qualifying, Charles Leclerc it put a damper on a weekend in Miami that started badly, with a spin on the first lap of FP. A mistake for which the Monegasque paid dearly, in fact not lapping in free practice and losing precious time to better evaluate the potential of the car both on the flying lap and on the race pace.
In the end, Leclerc faced the Sprint Qualifying in the dark, and it was not surprising that from the first second of SQ1 the Monegasque turned to find the limit. Limit also exceeded, considering that he went wide in turn 7 on the first fast lap. Then the #16 found the right rhythm and will keep company with Max Verstappen, 108 thousandths away today in Florida.
Leclerc’s words
In his post-Sprint Qualifying statements, Leclerc took some stances away from those who criticized him for his latest performances: “The hard work I put in to get the tires in the right window paid off, so I’m happy. There is a lot of chatter, in this sport we only remember the last race, and as soon as you have two bad qualifications and don’t do a great job, people start talking: it was good to put a stop to this but now we have to work on consistency and maintain this level, keeping the tires in the right window as I have done in the past“, this is the comment of the Monegasque at the Sprint Qualifying in Miami.
“I’m happy, because qualifying has been a weak point over the last two weekends, although in China it went slightly better, but we didn’t have the car to show these improvements. The weekend started off in a difficult way because unfortunately I did one lap in free practice, so I had to approach qualifying by going flat out straight away. Then I had to use another set of tires in SQ1, so it was complicated, but I found the right sensations straight away“. Naturally, having completed just one lap in FP1, the Monegasque will use the Sprint to begin to understand the potential of the package in terms of the race: “I have no idea about our pace, I can hope to have a good Sprint and have a great pace for Sunday“.
