Structure will allow vehicles to pass while the crossing, destroyed by rain in Rio Grande do Sul, is rebuilt
The Minister of Transport, Renan Filhodeclared this Tuesday (May 21, 2024) that the federal government will build a metal bridge within 30 days to allow vehicles to cross the Caí River via BR-116/RS.
The structure will be temporary. The objective is to allow cars and trucks to pass until the original bridge is rebuilt. The structure, which connects the cities of Nova Petrópolis (RS) and Caxias do Sul (RS), collapsed because of the heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul.
In an interview with GloboNews, Renan Filho stated that the new structure will have a smaller capacity than the original bridge. The mechanism will be used for approximately 6 months, when the government estimates that the reconstruction work will be completed.
“We are going to create a temporary metal bridge to guarantee passage, obviously with a smaller crossing capacity, but to free up that crossing point”declared the minister.
Once the metal crossing has been installed, the next step will be to demolish the structure left over from the collapsed bridge. According to Renan Filho, the new structure will be demolished to make way for a more suitable project, in which the bridge’s support pillars will no longer be submerged in the river.
