Protests in Georgia against the anti-European law
Georgia, the pro-Russian law that increasingly distances the country from Europe
On Saturday evening, thousands of protesters, around 50 thousand, gathered in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisito protest against a controversial law on “foreign agents” recently approved by parliament. According to the new legislation, foreign-funded non-governmental organizations must register as “foreign agents” and declare so the financing received is transparent.
Demonstrators marched peacefully in the pouring rain.

The protesters argue that this law will unfairly limit the activities of NGOs and will criminalize ties with international donors. They also fear it could be used to suppress opposition voices.
Currently, the bill has already been ratified at second reading and is awaiting a third reading before it can be adopted. The European Union is very concerned about this lawas indicated by the President of the European Commission von del Leyen in his May 1st tweet.
I am following the situation in Georgia with great concern and condemn the violence on the streets of Tbilisi.
The Georgian people want a European future for their country.
Georgia is at a crossroads. It should stay the course on the road to Europe.
