Gas, there is an agreement between the EU countries on the price cap of 180 euros
Today, Monday 19 December 2022, an agreement was reached between the countries of the European Union on the price of gas. At the Energy Affairs Council, according to European sources, a political agreement was reached on the price cap of 180 euros per megawatt hour. The agreement was reached with a qualified majority and Germany, after lengthy negotiations, also gave its approval. Hungary was against it, while Austria and the Netherlands abstained.
The gas price cap will come into effect on February 15th. The difference between the price of the TTF and the global reference indices, on the other hand, is set at 35 euros. The days required for the price to exceed 180 euros per megawatt hour for the correction mechanism to trigger remain three.
The Minister for the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto exulted over the agreement on Twitter: “The Energy Council has approved the gas price cap. It is the victory of the Italian and European citizens who ask for energy security. It is the victory of Italy who believed and worked to reach this agreement”.
