Former Mexican President Luis Echeverria Alvarez died on Saturday night, July 9, at the age of 100. This was announced by the current head of state Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
“On behalf of the Government of Mexico, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Luis Echeverria Alvarez, President of Mexico for a six-year term from 1970 to 1976,” he tweeted.
According to media reports, the politician died at his home in Cuernavaca, Morelos state. Information about the causes of death was not disclosed.
Echeverria Alvarez was born in 1922 in Mexico City. From 1970-1976 he was the 57th President of Mexico. Prior to that, from 1963 to 1969, he served as Minister of the Interior.
The ex-president was remembered as an adherent of authoritarian methods. So, during his term, extrajudicial killings involving the armed forces were not uncommon, and any protests and manifestations of dissent were brutally suppressed. While still prime minister, Alvarez was charged with shooting a student demonstration in 1968, but was acquitted years later.
At the same time, under Alvarez, the country’s economy grew significantly. His government introduced a number of significant reforms. In foreign policy, a course was chosen to strengthen equal cooperation with other states.
