Nordic country announces change in legislation to protect against Russian threat
Finland’s government said on Thursday (June 9, 2022) that it plans to build barriers on its border with Russia. The countries have a history of war and Helsinki feels threatened by its neighbor since the invasion of Ukraine.
The 1,300 km border between the 2 territories is covered by forest. Currently, it is marked with plastic signs and wires for most of its length.
In the process of joining NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), the European country fears that Moscow will send asylum seekers to the border.
The EU (European Union) accused Russia of sending hundreds of migrants from the Middle East, Afghanistan and Africa to Belarus’s border with the bloc in Poland late last year.
To make the construction of the barrier viable, Finland will have to change its legislation. The amendment will include a proposal that will limit the reception of asylum applications to specific points of entry.
The changes would also allow for the construction of fences and roads on the Finnish side to facilitate border patrolling.
