Dramatic shot by Red Bull: at Silverstone the world leader team presents itself with a new aerodynamic look. As many other single-seaters converge on the shapes of his single-seater, Adrian Newey takes another important step forward.
Mattia Binotto had anticipated that Red Bull would introduce in the British GP a package of innovations that Christian Horner had denied: words to the wind, because Milton Keynes worked hard not only in trying to reduce the weight of the RB18 which, gradually, it approaches the regulatory limit of 798 kg, but also to make the car more streamlined behind the driver’s shoulders with a completely new bonnet that streamlines the shape of the rear.
On the RB18, in fact, the idea of the excavation did not bring it on the bellies as the Alpine did by copying the Ferrari F1-75, but more in the rear, trying to streamline the body of the car near the engine.
Behind the attacks of the Halo we observe the presence of a sort of sidewalk that extends up to the outlet of the hot air in the queue which is no longer round in shape, but rectangular. There are also the gills that were previously visible diagonally on the hood and are now almost horizontal.
Under this lung, similar to that chosen by McLaren on the MCL36, you can see a flared body that aims to obtain two results: first – to increase the Coanda effect to bring some flow to the bottom; second – significantly improve the efficiency of the beam wing.
Red Bull, despite the words of its team principal, has no intention of slowing down the pace of developments in spite of any limitation dictated by the budget cap. The battle for the world championship is more open than ever and is also played in the ability to bring evolutions to the track faster than direct competition …
