For the summer of 2022, many wish for warm and cloudless weather. But how good are the chances?
Update from Monday, March 7th, 2022, 3:02 p.m: The first weather trends for the summer do not look good. If you look at the current calculations, the question arises: are there threats of severe thunderstorms and storms again in summer 2022? A weather expert explains.
The US weather service NOAA had already announced that the summer of 2022 would be significantly too wet (see first report). According to the rough estimate, summer could also be 1 to 2 degrees above the average climate, according to qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung to wetter.net. Warm weather and a lot of precipitation: That sounds like a high potential for severe weather.
Weather trend 2022: Danger of storms in summer – “That could be very explosive”
“All in all, this could indicate a dangerous summer of thunderstorms and storms,” explains Jung. Especially in June and July, the weather could get significantly too warm. The expert speaks of a deviation from the climate mean of up to 2 degrees. It will be particularly exciting with a view to the precipitation deviation.
June in particular could be too wet in Germany. According to Jung, this indicates that severe weather conditions with heavy rain, hail and squalls can set in again and again. “It could be very explosive,” said the weather expert. The situation is similar for July and August. “There is potential for very muggy weather with lots of thunderstorms and storms,” summarizes Jung. However, the calculations are only a first indication of the weather situation in summer. We now have to wait and see whether they arrive.

Weather forecast for Germany: How will summer 2022 be?
The US weather service NOAA has already published its long-term forecast. during that Spring weather in Germany in 2022 could become significantly too dry, things look very different for the summer. “June 2022 could already be too wet in large parts of Germany, i.e. bring the exact opposite of spring,” explains Dominik Jung.
That wouldn’t be unusual. And that wet weather could slip to the opposite extreme after extreme drought in spring. “Once a general weather situation has set in, it can last for several weeks, then the whole thing changes and the next extreme begins,” says the weather expert.
In June 2022 there could be far too much precipitation. Will summer then be too cold this year? “No” is Dominik Jung’s clear answer. It should be one to two degrees Celsius warmer in June than the average climate for the years 1991 to 2020. In combination with the precipitation, this could indicate a high potential for severe weather, explains the meteorologist. So, instead of that holiday feeling and sun, storms and danger?
Weather in summer 2022: storms instead of pure sun?
That could well be the case in the summer of 2022. The American NOAA weather model also provides new insights into the summer period from June to August 2022. Accordingly, temperatures of around one degree Celsius above the climate mean are expected. As a result, it even gets warmer than average. Jung reports that the entire summer of 2022 could be too wet, especially in the middle of the country and on the edge of the Alps.
“A warm summer, but also a very wet summer at times, that smells like a very, very exciting weather situation,” concludes the expert. So maybe February was just a foretaste of one or two storms that could hit Germany in the summer of 2022. Further Weather News* can be found on our topic page. (slo)
