It lights up more and more European derby between Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani. Yesterday the Superbonus and the sugar tax, today the crux of European alliances, with the AfD case in the foreground. Now the back and forth is daily. At stake is second place in the majority behind Fratelli d’Italia. The polls in recent days spoke of a possible overtaking by Forzi, today they predict a head-to-head (the survey of the ‘Noto’ institute for ‘Porta a Porta’). In any case, it would be a minimal gap: half or one percentage point at most.
What has ignited the dust in the last 24 hours is once again the Northern League’s relationship with Marine Le Penbut the inspiration comes from the shocking words on the ‘SS’ of the spitzenkandidat of the German far-right party Maximilian Krah, which a few weeks after the vote in Strasbourg caused a fracture within the Identity and Democracy group with the National Rassemblement, which officially closed the doors to Alternative fur Deutschland.
Salvini condemns Krah’s words and joins Le Pen. Tajani shares the choice of his ally and Minister of Transport but does not ‘save’ Le Pen and reiterates his “never allies” with the daughter of the historic leader of the French right. ”It seems to me a positive fact that finally listening to the in my words said several times in the past, the League has sided with the expulsion of Afd”, says the Foreign Minister during a debate on Made in Italy at Palazzo Wedekind, and then launches the jab: ”The problem is not the League, but Afd” and “the rally of Mrs. Le Pen who wants to leave NATO. One cannot think of governing Europe by being against Europe. Le Pen is certainly not a ‘pro-European”, the Italian national secretary cuts short.
It arrives by return post Salvini’s reply after a video connection with Le Pen himself: ”There is complete and total harmony with Marine”. Then he focuses on the storm that overwhelmed Krah (”when it is said that among the SS there were also good people, we are beyond good and evil…”), he hopes to “succeed in rebuilding the European centre-right” and launches his lash at the leader Fi: ”Of course, when Tajani also takes it out on Le Pen, in my opinion, is wrong… We work to unite”.
Other sparks between Lega and Fi were registered in the name of Silvio Berlusconi. Reason for the dispute over the slogan ‘less Europe’. ”It is surprising that the other day” Tajani “criticized the League’s slogan ‘less Europe’, League sources underline, ”given that it was the watchword also chosen by Berlusconi for the electoral campaign of the elections of 25 May 2014, when the current Foreign Minister was European Commissioner”. And again: ”It is surprising that our friend Tajani prefers the belligerent Emmanuel Macron to Marine Le Pen. The League does not change its mind and continues to believe that even in Brussels the center-right model that is governing well in Italy should be proposed.”
The Italian rejoinder entrusted to Fi sources is ready: ”The League is wrong and remembers badly, Berlusconi’s slogan was not ‘less Europe’, it was ‘less Europe in Italy, more Italy in Europe’. The point is the principle of subsidiarity whereby the higher level does not have to do what the lower level can do. Europe must worry about big things, it must create a common defense, it must decide by majority. Europe must decide on migration. We want more Europe from a political point of view, we need to know the principle of subsidiarity, not everyone knows it and there can be misunderstandings.”
The “problem”, warn blue sources, “is that Le Pen is against NATO and against Europe. Le Pen wants to leave NATO and is against European architecture”.
