The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, ordered the installation of his country’s embassy in Ramallah, located in the West Bank and the Palestinian administrative capital.
According to information from the EFE Agency, the information was released this Wednesday (22) by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Gilberto Murillo Urrutia, to the local press.
The Colombian Embassy in Israel, located in Tel Aviv, was recently closed due to the breakdown of diplomatic relations between the two countries, determined by Petro earlier this month.
Colombia already has a consular section in Ramallah, linked to the embassy in Tel Aviv. Bogotá has recognized Palestine as a State since August 2018.
This Wednesday (22), Spain, Norway and Ireland stated that they will take the same measure next week, which will increase the number of countries that recognize the Palestinian State to 146. The announcement sparked outrage in Israel.
Since the terrorist group Hamas’ attacks on Israel on October 7 last year, Petro has made statements against the Israelis, which have included comparing the offensive in the Gaza Strip to the Holocaust and accusations of genocide.
Israel and Colombia summoned ambassadors from the other country to protest, and Petro announced the suspension of the purchase of Israeli weapons before the decision to break diplomatic relations.
