“We have agreed that no Hungarian personnel will take part in the Alliance’s activities in Ukraine”
“With the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg we have agreed that no Hungarian personnel will take part in the Alliance’s activities in Ukraine and no Hungarian funds will be used to support them. Our next step this week was to ensure this agreement can stand the test of time. The prime minister Mark Rutte has confirmed its full support for this agreement and will continue to do so. In light of this commitment, Hungary is ready to support him at the helm of NATO”. Viktor Orban on X.
The news was anticipated in the morning by the Dutch media. Hungary has reportedly dropped its opposition to Mark Rutte as the country’s next secretary general Born, Dutch media reported today, after the outgoing Dutch prime minister and his Hungarian counterpart met on the sidelines of a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels. Citing sources, Dutch media NOS and RTL reported that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban did not reiterate his demand for an apology from Rutte for what Orban described last month as views “problems” on Hungary. The apology, the Reuters agency recalled this morning, had been one of the two conditions that Hungary had set for approving Rutte as Jens Stoltenberg’s successor at the helm of NATO. The other condition – the guarantee that the Hungary will not have to provide funding to Ukraine or send personnel to the war-torn country – it was satisfied last week by Stoltenberg.
The United States, Great Britain, France and Germany support Rutte in succeeding Stoltenberg, who will leave his position as NATO secretary general in October. Turkey also announced its support for the outgoing Dutch prime minister in April. Romania and Slovakia have not yet given the green light.
