Although it aroused the curiosity and interest of many, the partnership between Apple and OpenAI, announced this Monday, the 10th, did not please a well-known person in the world of technology: billionaire Elon Musk.
On his account on X, formerly Twitter, the businessman stated that the integration of OpenAI into Apple’s operating system would represent “an unacceptable security breach”. The partnership was announced yesterday, the 10th, on the first day of the Worldwide Developers Conference 2024.
The measure aims to bring Tim Cook’s company closer to artificial intelligence (AI) tools, in an attempt to prevent it from falling behind in the AI race. Thus, Apple users will have the possibility of integrating ChatGPT, from OpenAI, with the brand’s devices.
For Musk, the matter is worrying. “Apple has no idea what is really happening when it hands over its data to OpenAI,” he said in a post. “They’re selling you for nothing.”
To CNBC, the North American company stated that integration with OpenAI is an optional feature. The brand also stated that, when developing artificial intelligence, it focused on privacy.
Musk disagrees: “It is absurd that Apple is not smart enough to create its own AI, but is able to guarantee that OpenAI will protect its security and privacy!”, he wrote.
It is worth remembering that Elon Musk is one of the co-founders of OpenAI. However, he is now in the midst of a lawsuit against the company, alleging violations of the founding agreement.
In the new dispute, the billionaire even said, on X, that he would ban Apple devices from his companies – including X itself, Tesla and SpaceX – if the manufacturer insisted on continuing with the plans announced at the day’s event. 10. “And visitors will have to leave their Apple devices at the entrance, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage,” he posted.
Musk believes that the partnership between Apple and OpenAI allows for deep integration between iOS and the intelligent chatbot, but that is not what will happen. According to what was released by the companies, Siri will ask the user for permission every time it believes that their response can be assisted by ChatGPT. If the user authorizes it, only the question asked will be sent to OpenAI’s servers, which excludes the possibility of Sam Altman’s startup removing personal information from the user’s device.
Musk’s concern, however, has reason. OpenAI is often accused of using data from companies, artists and people without consent to train its AI models. This Monday, the 10th, Human Rights Watch released a report that reveals the use without consent of photos of Brazilian children and adolescents in the LAION-5B database, from the Laion organization, which is open source and can be used by any company to train AIs. Although there is nothing to link OpenAI to the case, it illustrated the dangers that AI training can pose to privacy.
