Elon Musk has hinted that he may be considering a partnership with Samsung to launch his own smartphone, dubbed “Cellular X”. The statement came after Apple announced, during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, the integration of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, into its devices.
In response to a tweet that suggested a partnership between his company X (formerly Twitter) and Samsung to develop an “X Phone”, Musk stated that the idea “is not out of the question”. The possible collaboration with Samsung would be a way for the businessman to compete directly with Apple in the smartphone market and offer an alternative to users supposedly concerned about the privacy of their data.
Responses to Apple
After the announcement of the partnership between Apple and OpenAI, Musk reacted to the news, calling it an “unacceptable security breach” and accusing Apple of compromising user security. The billionaire even threatened to ban iPhones from his companies, such as Tesla, SpaceX and SpaceX, claiming that Apple “has no idea what is really happening” when handing over data to OpenAI.
The relationship between Musk and OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, is complex. Musk co-founded the company in 2015, but left the board in 2018. Since then, he has been a critic of OpenAI, especially regarding its direction and commercialization efforts.
About mobile
Among the specifications imagined for the supposed “Cellphone X” would be a 6-inch Oled screen, compatibility with Starlink satellite internet, solar charging and could be used as a remote control for Tesla cars. However, so far, everything is just speculation. Samsung did not comment on the matter and did not provide concrete information about the development of the “Cellular X” or whether the partnership will actually come to fruition.
The South Korean brand has a strict “collabs” policy. The last time it launched a smartphone together with another company was in 2014, with the Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition.
