The process is also based on the Regulations on the Repatriation Procedure of Sentenced Persons, of April 7, 1994.
Through a statement, the Foreign Ministry assured that the Government of Ecuador will highly appreciate the cooperation of the Government of Colombia for the agile and effective application of the aforementioned documents and in this way “consolidate the bilateral relationship through the mechanisms of international cooperation between the two nations”.
The repatriation of foreign prisoners is a mandate from the Ecuadorian president, Daniel Noboa, to reduce overcrowding in Ecuadorian prisons, epicenter of the violence crisis attributed to organized crime, where more than 500 inmates have been murdered since 2020, most of them in a series of prison massacres due to disputes between rival gangs.
