Novak Djokovic on the attack: from shirts with betting company logos to 50% of tennis betting proceeds
“I think it’s illogical that we players can’t have betting company logos on our shirtsin addition to the fact that we cannot receive a fair share, and I mean at least 50%, of the proceeds that tournaments collect directly from the world of betting.” Novak Djokovic, fresh from his triumph at the 2023 US Open in the final against Medvedev (24th Grand Slam tournament, first ever in victories for the Majoes with two tournaments ahead of Rafa Nadal stuck at 22) goes on the attack even off the court.
During an interview on the social channels of the Professional Tennis Players Association (a union for tennis players created, among others, by the Serbian in 2019) Djokovic explains: “I know that 95% of my colleagues would get sponsored by a company and I would approve of it.”
Djokovic and the tennis players’ pension
The number one in world tennis underlined that he is aware of the fact that a large part of the money that tournaments acquire from sponsorship contracts flows into the so-called ‘players’ pension’, a fund which however can only be accessed from the age of 50 (the average tennis player, however, retires around the age of 35).
“Gamers are not well aware of the economic situation linked to the world of data and betting – Nole said. – And if they know it, they are not spending enough to get what they deserve: they give too much and receive too little.”
