Cyberbullying, bullies are genderless: 49.7% of digital harassment perpetrators are female
These are the results of a survey on Cyberbullying, carried out in the schools of Sardinia by Eurispes, with the contribution of the Regional Department for Planning and Budget, and thanks to the collaboration of the Regional Department for Education.
The survey involved 48 lower secondary schools and 49 lower secondary schools, for a total of 97 institutes. 5,784 questionnaires were completed, of which 3,586 by children, 1,361 by parents and 837 by the teaching staff. The massive participation in the research, not only by children but also by parents, is a fact that has shown a keen interest and great sensitivity towards the phenomenon of Cyberbullying in Sardinia.
On the other hand, managers and teaching staff completed fewer questionnaires than children and parents. The analysis of the questionnaires administered made it possible to identify the peculiar characteristics of Cyberbullies, of those who have been victims of them, of spectators, and to detect the opinion and role of parents And of the teaching staff in the context of digital harassment. Through the answers given by the students it was therefore possible to outline a fairly precise picture of the dynamics that are created around the phenomenon of Cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying, data from the Eurispes survey
First of all, bullies have no genderare, to the same extent, girls or boys: research has shown that 50.3% of the authors of digital acts of harassment they are male and 49.7% female. They have an age included between 13 and 19 years and the actions they carried out most frequently were those relating to silent telephone calls, telephone jokes or, alternatively, intentionally excluding someone from online groups.
To do this, they mainly used group chats and individual messages (WhatsApp, Telegram and similar applications). Those who carry out these actions, in the opinion of the interviewees, are anxious, insecure children and are generally part of a circle of well-known children, who especially target those who are unable to defend themselves or those with a physical handicap.
