During the last hours, The controversy was present in Florida after the publication of the new curriculum. In the more than 200 pages that the document has, some points included and approaches to the topics were questioned and created an atmosphere of controversy.
On Wednesday, the Florida Board of Education, a body under the Department of Education, approved the new quality standards for the study programs of the next school year. In the 217 pages of the document that establishes these guidelines, some items caused controversy and some discomfort among many parents.
As stated News Channel 8, the biggest point of controversy will be the guidelines for the contents related to the study of slavery in schools. On this point, the curriculum establishes that High school students should learn that “slaves developed skills that, on certain occasions, could be applied for their own benefit”, as indicated in the official text. This approach had already been included last year and, given the controversy it generated at that time, many parents expected it to be removed in this new edition.
