The General Civil Aviation Authority confirmed its commitment to supporting international efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector, in line with the international aviation community’s announcement of its commitment to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The Authority stated, in a statement yesterday, that the issue of sustainable aviation fuel and alternative fuels has become at the forefront of all international discussions, meetings and conferences related to the future of the aviation sector, as it is one of the main solutions to ensure the reduction of carbon emissions in the sector.
IATA estimates indicate that air traffic in 2050 is expected to generate about 1.8 billion tons of carbon emissions if it is operated with traditional aircraft fuel.
In order to achieve zero emissions, we must shift towards using sustainable aviation fuel by 65%, which is equivalent to producing more than 360 million tons (450 billion liters) of sustainable aviation fuel annually by 2050.
Engineer Maryam Al Balushi, Director of Environment at the Authority and Vice-Chairman of the Environmental Protection Committee in Aviation at ICAO, confirmed that the file of alternative fuels for the aviation sector occupies an important place within the government work agenda of the UAE, noting that the country has taken many serious and deliberate steps to develop a possible environment. To produce clean, sustainable, low-carbon aviation fuels.
She pointed out the state’s keenness to adopt and support all initiatives that serve this trend at the international level, out of its belief that international cooperation is a prerequisite for achieving a real turning point in the production and operation curve of the civil aviation sector at the global level.
She explained that the UAE has adopted the Sustainable Aviation Market (SAM 2025) initiative, which the country intends to organize next year, in conjunction with its hosting of the “Fourth Global Symposium for Implementation Support” in 2025, so that this market will serve as one of the accelerators supporting the increase in global production of sustainable, low-cost aviation fuel. Carbon, by providing an environmental platform that facilitates communication between project developers, financiers, banks, small and medium-sized enterprises, and other stakeholders.
Al Balushi stated that this initiative will accelerate and increase the spread of programs that aim for carbon-free aviation, stimulate partnerships and accelerate the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and low carbon aviation fuel (LCAF).
It is noteworthy that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) continuously monitors the progress witnessed by international efforts aimed at enhancing the production of sustainable aviation fuel, as it recently monitored that 122 international airports around the world provide sustainable aviation fuel, while the total value of the supply agreements that were announced reached About 53 billion liters of sustainable fuel, in addition to the approval of 42 raw materials within the “CORSIA” plan, suitable for producing sustainable aviation fuel.
