The band InSalvation, known in Christian circles, recently canceled a performance in the protestant community of Monnickendam a day in advance because the gay pastor Alexander Noordijk (48) would pray on site. The pastor is still amazed by it. “It is completely accepted with us in Monnickendam.”
The group was to perform in a sports hall last Saturday, September 24. The concert would be a collaboration between the church where Noordijk is pastor and the so-called ‘worship band’. Since the two parties are ‘theologically not on the same page’, it was decided at the last minute to cancel the performance, to the disappointment of almost four hundred fans.
“It was totally unexpected”, says Reverend Noordijk. “We had extensive contact the whole week before.” The band had asked the church to have another pastor pray during the worship evening, but the church refused to do so. He was of the opinion that Noordijk is simply their pastor.
The band, which is well known in evangelical circles, then decided to cancel the concert altogether. ,,It is a nasty situation that only has losers”, said Noordwijk. The band sings about love and this meeting could be enriching for people who see homosexuality as sinful. Homosexual people also believe and can pray. It is completely accepted with us in Monnickendam.”
God loves everyone
Various reactions can be read on the social media channels of InSalvation. For example, many people say that they do not agree with the choice of band because they are against excluding people. Others do support the choice, because they believe that the band should stand for its own principles.
The pastor himself is still willing to try again. “I believe they acted on their principles. I am not resentful and grant them the enrichment. You may disagree on something, but we all agree on Jesus Christ. My door will always be open to them. God loves everyone.”
Despite several contact requests, this site has heard nothing from the band InSalvation. Earlier, Jafeth Bekx, band leader and singer of InSalvation, gave in the Dutch daily newspaper not to go into detail about the situation. “It’s not about taking a stance against people. In the intensive conversation we have established that we have a difference of opinion. Out of respect for these differences and the local church, we have chosen not to let this evening take place.”
