Lavrov is calling for a peace conference on the war in Ukraine – under China’s auspices. This is also what Putin wants. But Xi wants to mediate in the Middle East.
Moscow/Beijing – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has proposed that China as host of a peace conference in Ukraine War In his opinion, Beijing would be ideally suited for this role. Russia’s President Wladimir Putin China recently acknowledged a “genuine desire” to end the conflict in Ukraine. China itself is not averse to a mediating role and is apparently trying to take on such a role in the Middle East conflict.
According to Lavrov, China and Russia the position that the causes of the conflict must first be addressed before an end to the war in Ukraine can be discussed. In addition, there is agreement that the legal and security interests of all parties should be protected. The Russian Foreign Minister said this in a statement published on Thursday (30 May) by the Russian news agency RIA Such an undertaking is not selfish, but means “respecting the realities on the ground, which reflect the will of the people living there,” Lavrov continued.
End of the Ukraine war: Russia “still open to negotiations” according to Lavrov
The Kremlin is “still open to negotiations” about ending the war in Ukraine, but under certain preconditions. This includes control of the occupied Ukrainian territories – a position that Kiev has considered unacceptable since the first day of Moscow’s invasion. “The negotiations must be based on the principle of the indivisibility of security and the realities on the ground,” said Lavrov, who also insisted again that Russia invaded Ukraine to ensure its own security. The results of the illegal Moscow referendum in the occupied Ukrainian territories must also be respected before there can be peace.
At the same time, he praised Beijing’s “constructive line” in its attempt to help resolve the war in Ukraine. This was a reference to Putin’s recent statement. During his recent visit to Belarus, he said that Moscow was open to peace talks “based on the current situation on the ground.” This was reported by the Ukrainian newspaper KyivPost.
China and the “primacy of international law”: Putin sees Beijing playing an important role in ending the Ukraine war
Even before his visit to Beijing, which was now about two weeks ago, Putin had stressed that Russia and China agreed on “important issues of the international agenda.” In an interview with the Chinese news agency Xinhua On May 15, he claimed that both countries were committed to “the primacy of international law” and were therefore working to “build a balanced, indivisible, integrated and sustainable global and regional security” in the hope of “stopping the West’s attempts to impose an order based on lies, hypocrisy and fictitious rules”.
This also applies to the war in Ukraine, Putin said at the time. China’s “position on resolving” the war in Ukraine is viewed positively. Beijing is “well aware of the causes of the Ukrainian crisis and its global geopolitical implications,” which is evident from the Chinese “12-point proposal” from last year. According to Putin, the Chinese proposals are “pragmatic and constructive initiatives” for peace “by renouncing self-interest and the constant escalation of tensions.”
Debate about ending the war in Ukraine: Kiev thinks little of Russia’s proposals
Russia has repeatedly called for talks on ending the war in Ukraine, provided that Kiev and the West recognize its territorial gains in the east of the country. Kiev has rejected this demand. Ukraine’s peace plan calls for a complete withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of internationally recognized borders. Under these circumstances, and at the request of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr ZelenskySwitzerland will host a peace conference in mid-June. However, it is still unclear whether China will participate in the conference and how the USA will be involved. USA again accused China’s leadership on Wednesday (May 29) of supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, China is trying to gain further influence in those countries that are looking for alternatives to the Western-led world order. The Chinese President Xi Jinping has now, at a meeting with heads of government of Arab states, stressed that the War between Israel and Hamas cannot last forever. This is what Chinese state media reports. Xi said that they are ready to work with the Arab states on this sensitive issue. This is how they want to ensure long-term peace and stability. The Chinese president’s concrete positions include support for a two-state solution and full membership of the Palestinians in the United Nations. (tpn)
