Carousel of the Arts takes you to discover an exhibition dedicated to the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani and his fruitful relationship with his first art dealer and collector, the Frenchman Paul Guillaume. At the Musée de l’Orangerie, the exhibition ‘Modigliani, the painter and his dealer’ tells the story of love at first sight in the Parisian art world.
“Paul Guillaume started out as an African art dealer. It was through native art that he came to modern art. He put them side by side and began, at the same level, in his presentations. That passion they both had deepened their friendship. We see how African masks influenced Modigliani’s portraits, especially the technique he uses on the eyes or the shape of the very elongated faces. That link between Modigliani and native art was very important for Paul Guillaume at that time,” explained exhibition curator Simonetta Fraquelli.
