In an interview with HS, Saarikko raised the tightening of earnings-related unemployment benefits back on the table and called for moderate wage increases.
Left Alliance Chairman, Minister of Education Li Andersson the Minister of Finance is astonished Annika Saarikon (central) labor market statements. In an interview with Helsingin Sanomat on Thursday, the head of the center, among other things, called on the wage movement to be content with moderate wage increases and proposed tightening earnings-related unemployment security.
“I am surprised that he highlighted the tightening of earnings-related unemployment security. The rest of society is debating how we can compensate people for the effects of rising living costs, ”Andersson says.

Saarikko highlighted the tightening of earnings-related unemployment security as a possible way to alleviate labor shortages and strengthen public finances. He said the center was still ready to push for change and asked if left-wing government parties were willing to reconsider their own negative positions.
“The Left Alliance is by no means ready to reconsider its position. I find it very special that this is even being shaken, ”says Andersson.
The archipelago also made a “exceptionally strong” petition for wage moderation to the wage earner in his own words. According to him, it could be devastating for Finland’s competitiveness and well-being if wage increases were to compete with rising prices in the autumn.
Andersson thinks it is “hugely illogical” that when it comes to improvements in the status of employees – for example, the salary program for carers and others in the municipal sector – politicians are warned not to get entangled in the labor market.
“But when it comes to curbing wage increases or directly weakening the position of wage earners, for example in the Competitiveness Pact, there seems to be no problem in the government’s reliance on the social partners to come up with certain types of solutions.”
The archipelago said the government could potentially support moderate wage increases by easing income taxes. It would support purchasing power but increase public indebtedness.
The Left Alliance, on the other hand, has pushed for the refund of social security contributions transferred to employees due to the competitiveness agreement to be paid back to employers. The measure would increase purchasing power in the same way as tax cuts, but would burden employers instead of public finances.
“Saarikko should understand how useful a block changes in social security contributions are. They improve purchasing power and reduce the pressure on wage increases without weakening public finances, ”says Andersson.
Saarikko, on the other hand, said that the left-wing alliance was on the side of the workers for ideological reasons, and described his own proposal to reduce taxation as purely practical. This statement is also strange by partner Andersson.
“It is traditional political rhetoric to claim that one is acting in the common sense and blinded by a dissenting ideology. Saarikko’s position would be more credible if he occasionally heard speeches in support of his status as an employee. ”
The Left Alliance still does not rule out tax cuts. The party has suggested that instead of taxing the income of low- and middle-income earners, the reductions should be targeted at VAT on food. According to Saarikko, this option is still on the table, and decisions on tax cuts will be made in the autumn budget debate.
The Greens Chairman, Minister of the Environment and Climate Maria Ohisalo says the Greens are in favor of tax cuts for low- and middle-income earners.
“We are ready to look at it as one element. In addition, we have presented ‘energy money’ for the countryside and, above all, for low-income people, which is now being investigated on our initiative at the Ministry of Finance, ”says Ohisalo.
He also highlights the early increase in the social security index, which will take effect in August. The Greens believe that additional index increases may be needed more often.
Ohisalo does not take a stand on the tightening of earnings-related unemployment security proposed by Saarikko, although the Greens have previously supported the staggering of the level of security, for example. Ohisalo does not take a position on the salary increases either, because he does not say they belong to the government.
