It could be a groundbreaking development: BMW has developed a clutch assistant that can automatically perform the gear shifting as well as the clutch if the driver so wishes. The Bavarian motorcycle manufacturer is introducing this world first next autumn for the large R 1300 GS travel enduro. The new system, called “Automated Shift Assist” or simply ASA, is expected to cost just over 1000 euros extra. Up to now, automatic clutches have only been used in motocross. In normal road motorcycle construction, quickshifters have become popular over the past fifteen years in favor of faster gear shifting.
