Dahomey by Mati Diop wins the Golden Bear for best film at the 74th edition of the Berlinale. The international jury, chaired by Lupita Nyong'o and composed of Brady Corbet, Ann Hui, Christian Petzold, Albert Serra, Jasmine Trinca and Oksana Zabuzhko, thus crowns the French director of Senegalese originswho dedicated his documentary to the return to Benin of twenty-six objects stolen from the Kingdom of Dahomey during the war of colonization and preserved at the Musée du quai Branly in Paris.

Hong San-soo once again misses the Golden Bear and wins the fourth Silver Bear of his career. Jury Prize to L'empire by Bruno Dumont. Sebastian Stan, known as the Winter Soldier of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wins his first prize at a Festival: with A Different Man, in which he plays an aspiring actor suffering from a facial malformation, he obtains the Silver Bear for best leading role performance. Emily Watson receives the award for best supporting performance in the Festival's opening film, Small Things Like These, playing a nun involved in the Magdalene Houses case. Nothing to do for the two Italian films in competition, Antoher End and Gloria!.
Among documentaries, No Other Land wins, centered on a Palestinian activist, directed by an Israeli-Palestinian collective of four young activists and created as “an act of creative resistance in the hope of greater justice.” In the Encounters section, dedicated to the most pioneering works, Direct Action stands out, a fluvial documentary that tells the story of a rural collective of one hundred and fifty people who successfully resisted the expansion project of an international airport in 2018, which from 2021 has given birth of a new ecological movement.
