Buckingham Palace confirmed Elizabeth’s death to all major media outlets about five hours after the initial warning message. Edwards told TV: “The Queen passed away peacefully in Balmoral this afternoon. The King (Charles) and Queen Consort (Camilla) remain in Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow.”
After an image of the flag at Buckingham Palace was shown at half-mast, Huw told viewers: “Just moments ago, Buckingham Palace announced the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.” At the end of this announcement, the emotion was evident in his voice.
The broadcaster sent Thursday afternoon BBC News Special out with the next scheduled program BBC News at six. The presenter was dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and black tie.
Incidentally, unlike in the past, the BBC no longer has the scoop on the death of members of the royal family. The message of Elizabeth’s death was quickly posted on the palace’s website. Furthermore, this website went black.
