Autumnal equinox|The sun shines perpendicular to the equator.
Today is the autumnal equinox. It means that day and night are approximately the same length everywhere around the globe.
At the autumnal equinox, the sun shines perpendicular to the equator. After that, the Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the Sun, which is why the length of daylight hours shortens in the North. In the southern hemisphere, we are heading towards summer again.
In the northern hemisphere, the days get shorter until the end of December, i.e. until the winter solstice.
Even in Finland, the days are starting to be shorter in the north than in the south.
The autumnal equinox falls on either September 22 or 23 every year.
