Athletics|Rome’s long and triple jump venue divides opinion. Even when walking on the platform, you notice that everything is not normal.
European Championship stage Stadio Olimpico’s unique long jump and triple jump venue, built on scaffolding, excites the athletes.
The platform is said to bounce around a lot.
The fact that Finnish photographers have received reprimands when they have walked around the jumping area during competition performances shows the importance of the situation. Walking has been noticed to shake TV cameras and destabilize the image.
For some jumpers, a trampoline-like platform is clearly suitable. Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou forged a shocking streak in the length final: 842, X, 849, 845, 865 CR, 865.
In one of the longest series of all time, there was also European Championship gold.
Expert Lauri Hollo isn’t excited about the hype.
“A lot of such platforms are made for all kinds of market and park races, but they have not been seen in value races. So it’s a bit strange.”
Hollo points out that utilizing an exceptional jumping spot is a matter of skill.
“I don’t really like it. I’m more of a tradition niilo. The jumping place should be on the side of the running track.”
Triple Jumper Tuomas Kaukolahti told about his personal experience with the platform on Sunday.
“The base bounces a little more.”
For him, the most important thing on that platform is to make the movement of the jump go forward, because otherwise the direction of movement is upwards and the speed slows down.
According to Kaukolahti, the platform can be useful for some athletes if the jumper or jumper manages to be on top of the effort.
“Germany Max Hess is a good example. He knows how to use the platform very well. He has jumped his longest jumps in the hall on a platform of the same style,” Kaukolahti said.
Hess, 27, is the triple jump European indoor champion from 2016 and the World Indoor silver medalist from the same year. His indoor track record is 17.52. The outdoor track record is 17.20.
According to Kaukolahti, you got used to the platform after one jump.
“The others jumped quite well, so it’s pointless to call out the platform,” Kaukolahti said.
His result was 15.79, with which he was fourth last in the qualification.
Roman In Hollo’s opinion, the jumping place can be considered a form of so-called equipment doping in athletics.
“That’s how it goes in athletics. Track surfaces are faster than ever, and both racing and training shoes are constantly evolving.”
