INTERNATIONAL LEADERS CONGRATULATE LULA
On Sunday (30.Oct), when Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) was elected president of Brazil, international leaders congratulated PT on the victory against Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
French Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak were some of the European leaders who greeted Lula.
Joe Biden, President of the United States, reinforced his confidence in Brazil’s electoral process. He stated that the elections were “free, just and trustworthy”.
Among the Latin American leaders who congratulated the president-elect are Gabriel Boric, from Chile, and López Obrador, from Mexico.
Argentina’s president, Alberto Fernández, was the main standout among Latin American neighbors who recognized Lula’s victory. He came to Brazil to show support for the PT on the day after the results of the polls, on October 31. This was the first meeting of the future Brazilian president with an international leader.
US INTEREST RATE
O Federal ReserveCentral Bank of the United States, decided on wednesday (2.nov) raise the country’s interest rate. The range went from 3% to 3.25% to 3.75% to 4%. This is the highest level since December 2007. Here is the intact of the press release (84 KB, in English)
FINLAND AND SWEDEN IN NATO
On Tuesday (Nov. 1), the Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, asked Hungary and Turkey to approve the joint request of Finland and Sweden to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).
Turkey and Hungary are the only members of the alliance that have not yet ratified the request. In July, the Nordic countries were formally invited to join NATO.
SUPREME COURT & DONALD TRUMP
Also in the 3rd, the United States Supreme Court temporarily blocked the access of the Tax Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives to former President Donald Trump’s tax returns.
The Republican is under investigation for financial fraud and for trying to keep his tax records secret while he was in the US presidency. The commission has until noon on November 10 to appeal the judge’s decision.
USA & NORTH KOREA
On Thursday (Nov 3), the United States accused North Korea of secretly supplying artillery shells to Russia as aid in the war against Ukraine.
According to John Kirby, spokesman for National Security at the White House, the ammunition was being sent to countries in the Middle East and North Africa, which would prove North Korea’s willingness to support Russia.
In September, US intelligence sources reported that Moscow was buying North Korean weapons for use in Ukraine.
The military talks followed recent revelations that the Russians are also counting on Iran to support them in the war.
