Mexico City.- A federal judge sentenced Junnuén Alveli Flores Obregón to 3 years and 6 months in prison and to pay a fine of 8,419 pesos, after assuming his membership in the criminal gang that attacked journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva.
In a hearing held this Monday, June 17, Edmundo Perusquia Cabañas, control judge of the Federal Criminal Justice Center of the North Prison, imposed the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to the crime of criminal association.
The sanction was imposed under the terms of an abbreviated procedure, a mechanism through which the defendants accept their responsibility for the crime, in exchange for the minimum sentence plus an additional discount to it.
This legal figure prevents the accused from being brought to trial and sentenced to a greater penalty.
Flores is the romantic partner of Eric Hazael Ramos Mendoza, one of those allegedly involved in the attack against the journalist.
Since last March, the now sentenced woman left the Santa Martha Women’s Prison, Acatitla, after obtaining the change of precautionary measure after one year and 17 days of confinement.
Although he still has two years and more than 5 months of his sentence left to serve, Flores will no longer return to prison because Judge Perusquia granted him the benefit of replacing his sentence with treatment in freedom, that is, the application of labor measures. , educational and curative.
Javier Esquinca, lawyer representing the journalist, stressed that Flores Obregón accepted before the judge that he had been in possession of drugs, weapons and cell phones during his capture and that he was part of a criminal association that attacked his client, although not of the attack itself.
He explained that the woman has two other ongoing proceedings, one for crimes against health and another for possession of weapons for the exclusive use of the Army, but in one she also requested the abbreviated procedure and in another she obtained the conditional suspension of the process.
For the attack against Gómez Leyva, recorded on December 15, 2022, the authorities arrested 14 alleged suspects, 8 of them men and 6 women.
Of all of them, only five women decided to plead guilty to get out of prison in the shortest time possible.
On February 26, Judge Perusquia sentenced the four who initially pleaded guilty to the crime of criminal association to 3 years, 11 months and 16 days in prison and to pay a fine of 10,270 pesos.
The sentence was imposed on Daniela Amairani Salgado Cuéllar, Leslie Soledad Gómez Jaramillo, Tania Jacqueline Calzada Jaramillo and Elizabeth Mireya Ramírez Castillo. Two of them are also partners of some of the detainees.
According to the FGR, during the searches of their homes, drugs, weapons, and vehicles used by the gang headed by Armando Escárcega Valdez “El Patrón” – imprisoned in the United States – were found, which operated mainly in the Venustiano Carranza Mayor’s Office. .
The only woman who did not want to plead guilty and decided to go to trial is Cinthia Yeyetci Viay Martínez, who on July 1 will appear at an intermediate hearing in which the FGR will ask to impose a sentence on her.
The 8 detained men also did not assume full responsibility and will go to trial.
