Session was interrupted after clash between police and protesters; result is victory for governor Tarcísio de Freitas
The deputies of Alesp (Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo) approved by 62 votes to 1 the privatization bill for Sabesp (Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo) this Wednesday (Dec 6, 2023). The result came after a strike due to confusion involving police and protesters.
The session started at 5:30 pm. The PT, Psol and PSB benches were the first to speak, until they were interrupted by shouts from groups opposed to the project that occupied the assembly galleries. President of the house, deputy André do Prado (PL) requested increased security.
The session was interrupted and the PM (Military Police) contained the confusion with the use of pepper spray and tear gas. After the plenary was emptied, work resumed. The deputies decided to proceed with the vote electronically.
Analysis of the bill began on Monday (Dec 4, 2023). The following day, state deputies ended the discussion as soon as he met the minimum requirements to be voted on.
PL 15/01/2023, authored by governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), was being processed urgently. On November 22, the text received approval from the Constitution, Justice and Writing committees; Finance, Budget and Planning; and Infrastructure.
In the text, Tarcísio states that the sale of the company’s shares will guarantee the necessary resources for the universalization goals set out in the New Sanitation Legal Framework and the tariff reduction. Here’s the complete of the document (PDF – 1 MB).
