People: an American woman found out about her daughter’s Sanfilippo syndrome thanks to social networks
A mother of two children from the United States, Morgan Rachal, accidentally learned about her daughter’s terrible diagnosis thanks to a video from social networks. On how to recognize the symptoms of “childhood dementia”, she told People.
According to Rachal, her 18-month-old daughter Lydia Sanfilippo syndrome. The American clarified that this disease is often called childhood dementia, since the child gradually develops dementia and loses the ability to learn, talk and walk. “I didn’t even think that there was anything wrong with her – she did everything she was supposed to do at her age. However, she had ear infections, problems with constipation and sleep disturbances. But all these are ordinary things for babies,” the woman noted.
However, she began to worry after her mother showed her a video on social media about children with the very rare Sanfilippo syndrome. They all had prominent brow ridges and bushy eyebrows, just like Lydia’s. In addition, they all had similar ear and digestive problems. Having compared all the facts, the woman decided, just in case, to take a genetic test, which turned out to be positive. “Doctors said that the disease has not yet affected her brain. Usually regression begins at three or four years,” said Rachal.

She noted that there is no cure for Sanfilippo syndrome, but there are drugs that slow the progression of the disease. Therefore, early diagnosis of the disease is very important, as it gives children a chance to resist the disease longer, says Rachal.
