An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the Arequipa region in southern Peru on Sunday, according to what the National Institute of Geophysics announced.
The earthquake, whose epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, occurred near Caravelli province in the Arequipa region at a depth of 25 kilometers, according to the institute.
The US Geological Survey estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 6 degrees and indicated that its epicenter was at a depth of 19.9 kilometers.
The authorities did not issue a tsunami warning. There was also no information immediately available about human or material losses.
Peru is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area of intense seismic activity that extends along the western coast of the American continent. The country is hit by 400 tangible earthquakes every year.
