A prisoner from the Lleida penitentiary center has managed to punch a hole in the wall of his cell to attack the inmate who was occupying it, with whom he was having an argument. The event, as sources from the Department of Justice have explained to EFE, took place around ten o'clock at night on Saturday, when inmate RGR managed to tear off the radiator in his room and with one of the pieces make a hole to communicate with the adjoining cell, which was occupied by prisoner MAM, with whom he was having an argument.
The prison officials heard the blows and screams among the prisoners and approached the cell area, where, according to the CSIF union in a statement, the inmate who was carrying a piece of iron also threatened them. Given this situation, an internal intervention team was activated that managed to reduce the prisoner although several of the officials had to be treated for minor bruises, according to the union.
The prisoner was transferred to the Arnau de Vilanova hospital in Lleida, as he had injuries to his hands, although he refused to receive medical assistance, so he returned to the penitentiary center around two-thirty in the morning.

The union points out that this incident demonstrates “the lack of investments in passive security in the Lleida prison as well as the deplorable state of this infrastructure, where public workers have to carry out their work.” The union center, which together with other unions has been in conflict with the Department of Justice for weeks over the safety of officials in prisons, affirms that the Catalan penitentiary system “is leaking due to the professional incompetence” of those responsible for it. .
“How is it possible that after years of reporting, by CSIF, about the state of the cells of the special department, we find that an inmate can rip out the radiator and destroy the cell?” asks the union, who also questions if it is necessary for officials to put their lives at risk “to subdue an extremely violent inmate without being able to use spray of adequate action provided by law” or use devices that stun, such as Taser electric guns.
