Civil defense officials in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul said on Thursday that the number of victims of massive floods in areas of southern Brazil has risen to 107 people. Officials said another 136 people were still missing, while 374 people were injured.
The floods forced more than 230,000 people to leave their homes, and an estimated 1.4 million or more people were affected in 425 towns in the state.
The Brazilian Air Force transported 25 tons of relief supplies to the area, including medicines, water treatment plants and food supplies.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a post on the “X” application, “Work continues, and Brazil is united in its efforts to rebuild Rio Grande do Sul.” Rain fell again in the regional capital, Porto Alegre, yesterday afternoon, Wednesday. Civil defense authorities in Rio Grande do Sul issued a warning of heavy rains and strong storms with speeds exceeding 90 kilometers per hour in large parts of the state.
