Honda is taking its interest in the lawn mower market too seriously. To the point of creating a model worthy of the Guinness World Records (the record book). The champion mark, in this case, is not the amount of green leaves he can extract from the ground, but speed. Its first version, released in 2014, took just 6.29 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 160 km/h (measured in miles). It’s faster than a Nissan GTR. The final speed reached 188 km/h. In 2019, a model update the Mean Mower V2, was even faster. Now, the most powerful gardening tool in history has clocked an impressive top speed of 215 km/h.
To go that fast, he required six engineers to dedicate 400 hours to the project. The four-cylinder, 999 cubic centimeters engine was taken from a motorcycle, the CBR 1000RR superbike. With 203 horsepower and weighing 220 kilograms, its power-to-weight ratio is 850 hp per ton. And that’s more than the Bugatti Veyron. This leads to two questions. The first: if it’s that fast, can the six-inch carbon-fiber blades ever cut anything? And the second :pWhy did Honda create something like this?
The answer lies in a dispute with another carmaker, GM. Honda’s English tools division has a partnership with Team Dynamics Motorsport, which suggested the Japanese brand build something like this to surpass the marks of the hitherto record holder Viking T6, powered by a Chevrolet Corvette V8. Challenge accepted, they developed the Mean Mower and went to test it in the California desert. Is there grass there? No. But who cares? Apart from the engine, everything else is standard components, such as the carbon superkart seat, in addition to some 3D-printed elements.
