During a press conference held last Monday (20), the director general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the coronavirus pandemic could imply the cancellation of personal events at the end of the year. “It may be time to rethink your festive plans,” warned the organization, given the growing number of cases caused by the Ômicron variant. “A canceled event is better than a canceled life,” said Ghebreyesus, admitting that people are “tired of the pandemic.”
In the United States, the variant became dominant less than 20 days after it was first detected, while in Africa, which reports the fewest new cases in 18 months, it has reached the fourth highest number of cases in a single week since the onset of the pandemic. “There is now consistent evidence that Omicron is spreading significantly faster than the Delta variant. And it is more likely that people who have been vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19 will be infected or reinfected.” said Tedros.
Due to this increase, several countries have already imposed new restrictions on the meetings scheduled for Christmas and New Year. The Netherlands will go into lockdown from Sunday, allowing a maximum of two guests in any indoor meeting, except for Christmas and New Year, when up to four people can gather. In the province of Ontario, Canada, only ten people can meet indoors. In France, Paris canceled her traditional fireworks display, and in England, Queen Elizabeth II canceled her traditional Christmas family reunion.
