Rockstar Games, GTA 6 development studiothe most anticipated game ever, has suffered several DDoS attacks (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks in recent days that have reportedly affected the online services of some games.
The attacks came after Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto Online September 17 updatewhich was not well received by the community due to the presence of the BattlEye anti-cheat system.
Give us back Steam Deck!
This is a way to protect the community from cheaters, but its addition has suddenly made the game incompatible with Steam Deckirritating more than a few people who were using Valve’s portable console-PC hybrid to play. This is apparently where the DDoS attacks came from, launched using a botnet against Rockstar Games’ authentication servers.
Content creator and leaker Mors Mutual Insurance explained the story in a series of posts on X, detailing how the attacks weighed down GTA Online and Red Dead Online servers. Another user pointed out that the BattlEye website also went offline at about the same time as Rockstar Games’ servers. According to Mors Mutual, a different group was behind the attack on the BattlEye website.
There is actually a way to Make BattleEye Compatible with Steam Deck. Valve explained on its blog that developers simply need to contact BattlEye to enable anti-cheat on Proton, setting the compatibility level to allow Windows applications to run on Linux devices like Steam Decks without requiring any additional modifications from users. There are already several games that use BattlEye to be playable on Steam Decks, including ARK: Survival Evolved, DayZ, and Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord, with the former even being among the Verified Games from the platform.
