Concert review|PMMP didn’t try to be hip or grown up with their first stadium gig, but pushed forward with the old frenzy. At the Olympic Stadium, especially the heavier adaptations got their due.
PMMP: The whole show.
At the Olympic Stadium on 23 August 2024
Stadikka opens from a half standstill. Many people know it because PMMP sang that.
Summer friends-song is reportedly based entirely on true events.
On Friday, this and thirty other songs were heard a stone’s throw away from that milieu, at the Olympic Stadium.
of PMMP Saturday’s concert was originally marketed as the actual comeback gig. On the other hand, the band already performed at various festivals earlier in the summer.
Whatever you call Friday’s show, it was an hour and a half trip to childhood, adolescence and the difficult moments of adulthood, or maybe all of them. It was an intense experience shared by around 40,000 people.
The moment before the start of the concert felt historic – after all, we are talking about a band that held a whole generation of Finns in its grip for a decade, and whose music still finds listeners among people of all ages.
The concert the opening song was Harder hands. From among the smoke, behind the heavy drum and bass, a song emerged, which was almost terrifying to hear at a gig of this size. The song about the death of a young person with lullaby vocals fascinated and haunted when it came out in 2005 and still does.
Next hearing About the travel song it was a little hard to get a grip. Its briskness cheered up the overwhelming aftertaste of the previous song, but both the artists and the audience seemed to be still finding their way.
After these warm-ups Grandma already hit the core of nostalgia. The atmosphere in the front row could only be imagined from further away in the stands, when Paula Vesala and Mira Bullet surrendered to the support of the public.
To the concert could fit a whole bunch of beloved songs. In a helium balloon sensitivity and power combined. Belonging to the same album released in 2012 Jesus is not coming are you ready was also a great song choice. Its message never gets old: Give failure stories / Rebellion of this time.
Presented at the beginning of the gig This is life brought a smile to the lips of both singers. That if anything felt like a genuine PMMP moment.
Summer friends it was already raining. The song was visited Olavi Uusivirtawho performed briefly even before the official start of the gig. And of course that included tasting and serving fisu shots. The song, beloved by many, drove both the audience and the singers wild.
Musically the best part of the gig were the songs, for which the band created a heavy, even metallic background. In this case, the whole band got their rights, the volume was not spared, the words were spat out or sung beautifully.
These songs were, for example The last lament, Worms, Shock rock and He who is afraid is silent. In them, the drums, bass and guitar took turns in the spotlight, which was now sometimes consumed by the vocals.
Especially as a counterweight Thrust rock The c-section was amazing – even though the song was booming, the tiles of Eden and the green light show manage to stop the moment and float in it.
At the concert, it was also pleasing that the arrangements respected the original songs. A few songs were clearly done differently: borrowed from Noitalinna Huraa band Kid brother got a stripped start, Swans a cappella chorus.
The gig there was a short break in the middle, followed by a classic, about intimate partner violence, surrounded by a spoken word performance Some limit.
“There are so many sides to love, and maybe not all of them are love after all,” stated Vesala, and started Nursery.
PMMP has sung about love in ways that deviate from the usual pop lyrics. Violence, addiction, betrayal, all this with brutal directness and in a form suitable for the dance floor.
That’s where, among other things Rubber song and Girls created a funny atmosphere, for example Mary Magdalene led to the other end. The redness and blackness, the contrast of the stems and the reduced performance represented the depth and darkness that is attractive in PMMP’s music.
One of the most special moments of the gig was San Francisco, which started from the other side of the stadium: the singers left the spotlight and the song continued, but the attention shifted back to the stage, where the drag queens playing Mira and Paula lip-synched the song. San Francisco tells about the longing for a city where one’s own body or norms do not form a prison.
Thirty the song is quite a performance. Sometimes it felt like we were really rushing, especially towards the end.
But the going did not stop. Closing track Tan lines wildly released the last energies.
PMMP, who got back together for this summer, pulled the gig full, with love and unapologetically. A couple of words heard more than once from the stage summarizes the atmosphere:
Damn it!
