Sergio Mattarella in Moldova raises the alarm about Russian fake news in Italy: “Let the EU be fast, problems don’t wait”
The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, is in Moldova, where he held talks with the Moldovan President Maia Sandu in the capital Chisinau. “The relations between Moldova and Italy are intense and excellent – said Mattarella – demonstrating the solid ties that unite our countries.
Our trade has exceeded 660 million euros and the presence of Italian companies in various sectors of the Moldovan economy it is a source of satisfaction for us, as it offers a contribution to the development of the country. Our friendship is also fueled by the presence of a large, hard-working and well-integrated Moldovan community in Italy, which offers an extraordinary contribution to the socio-economic development of my country on a daily basis. The Moldovan community in Italy represents a bridge between our countries, a bridge that rests on the solid foundations offered by the cultural ties that unite us, as demonstrated by the concert we attended yesterday and for which I would like to once again thank President Sandu. The Russian disinformation campaign – Mattarella said again – it is insistent throughout Europe and must be addressed within the EU and within NATO. A few hundred kilometers from here the brutal war of aggression unleashed by the Russian Federation rages. The recent G7 Summit hosted by Italy confirmed that our desire to assist Ukraine will not waver and will continue as long as necessary. With President Sandu – underlined the Head of State – we also spoke about the importance of preserving our liberal democracies, especially in the current international context. Freedom and democracy are never guaranteed, they must be defended and consolidated.
There are acts of disinformation in Italy, we record them and they are not from today. There is a multiplicity of websites, a widespread storm of fake news and these are unacceptable forms of hostility. I hope that rules of conduct will be established by international institutions.” In recent years, including within the framework of the Platform for Support to Moldova, Italy has made approximately 40 million euros available as a contribution to the assistance of refugees Ukrainians and to alleviate the consequences of the energy crisis on Moldovan families. This is a contribution that we will continue to ensure in the future as part of the new Platform for the Development of Moldova”. Mattarella explained that “Italy will continue to stand by Moldova on its path towards the European Union, as also confirmed in the Joint Declaration signed a short while ago by Deputy Prime Minister Gherasimov and Deputy Minister Cirielli. “Europe – concluded Mattarella – represents a community of values and legal norms, thanks to which we have built a model of coexistence based on democratic order and peace, of which we hope Moldovan citizens will soon be able to be a full part”.
“We don’t want to live in a country where children are put in prison for criticizing the government. We want to live freely in the European space and we are ready for every effort,” Moldovan President Maia Sandu said in the conversation. The two main problems of Moldova are, Sandu explained, Russia’s aggressiveness and corruption, which must also be fought through the reform of the judiciary, to restore integrity to the judges.
The Romanians’ chants in favor of Putin were fake news. Here’s what the fans in the Munich stadium were really singing. VIDEO
The fake news machine, in the meantime, has also started to hit Euro2024. In particular in the match on Monday 17 June in which Romania beat Ukraine 3-0. In the videos released online shortly after the end of the match, Romania fans could be heard singing a chorus of praise for Putin. But this is false news, a “fake news”, as Romanian users immediately pointed out when commenting on the misleading post. Because the footage had been cut and edited so that only the crowd could be heard chanting Putin’s name. In reality, in the video and, above all, in the complete audio, which you find below, the fans of the team that won the match on the pitch can be heard repeating an insult against the Russian president: “Putin khuylo!”, which means “Putin fuck…”.
