The Umm Al Quwain Fishermen’s Cooperative Society plays prominent roles in developing the infrastructure of the fishing sector in the emirate, in line with the interest and care given by the Umm Al Quwain government to organizing the work of fishermen, alleviating the burdens on them and developing the profession in general. The association is making great efforts to preserve fish wealth in the emirate through a group of initiatives and projects that improve fish stock levels and maintain their sustainability, which contributes to enhancing food security at the state level in general.
Jassim Humaid Ghanem, Chairman of the Association’s Board of Directors, stressed that the attention and care given by the Umm Al Quwain government to fishermen in the emirate had the most important role in preserving the profession, which is linked to the heritage of our ancestors, and reflects an important aspect of the history of the UAE.
He said: The association recently introduced, in cooperation with the Umm Al Quwain Municipality Department, a number of fish breeders in environmentally friendly metal nurseries. With the aim of restoring the natural biomass of fish, which contributes during the breeding season to enhancing the emirate’s fish stocks.
He explained that the incubators contain several types of fish, such as hair, safi, fisher, yam, kapit, shaam, and farsh, which helps to achieve self-sufficiency of high-quality fish with excellent specifications that are required in the markets.
He pointed out that the fish incubators project is part of the national responsibility to preserve the country’s fish wealth, and aims to raise the egg survival rates of these fish, which contributes to increasing the stock of demersal fish, alleviating the severity of losses resulting from the effects of human activities, and increasing the types of fish that suffer from overfishing. , and improve current sustainable fisheries production.
Regarding support for fishermen, Jassim Hamid Ghanem said: The association has installed an advanced security system to monitor Marsa Al-Midan port, and placed surveillance cameras directed at the marinas, sidewalks, and parking lots. With the aim of securing the marina, preserving fishermen’s property, and controlling wrong behavior, in addition to controlling and organizing the movement of fishing boats among fishermen.
He added: The association provided a center concerned with servicing and maintaining the engines of fishermen’s boats in order to reduce the financial burden on them, noting that about 920 boats with all their equipment were maintained during the past year at the center.
He continued: The association established an ice factory with a daily production capacity of 559 ice cubes, which contributed to meeting all the needs of fishermen, with regard to preserving and cooling their harvest of fish. The association also provides a mobile and fixed marine workshop that carries out the tasks of logistical support, maintenance, and repair of boats and machinery, and in enhancing communication. With fishermen, guiding them around the clock.
Al-Qaraqir
Jassim Ghanem pointed out that the association provides all sizes of karaqir to fishermen through a factory it established specifically for this purpose, in addition to providing a service of towing, unloading and lifting boats to and from homes around the clock to facilitate the fishermen and help them sell the proceeds of their catch in the fish market through the association’s auction hall.
