Azarov agreed with Putin’s position that Zelensky’s powers had expired
Former Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov in a conversation with Izvestia is 100 percent agreed with the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the legitimacy of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky.
The politician noted that the powers of the head of state had expired. He recalled that he himself participated in the development and adoption of the Ukrainian constitution, so he knows for sure that it does not contain any position on extending the presidential term.
“Article 103 of the constitution directly says: five years – and, please, hold elections. At the same time, in 2015, a martial law law was adopted, which provides for restrictions on voting rights. But this law directly contradicts the constitution, and, naturally, the legally highest norm is the norm of the constitution,” the politician noted.
Azarov recalled that we are only talking about extending the powers of the Verkhovna Rada during the period of martial law, but not the president.
Earlier, Putin said that the decision of the leadership of Ukraine and the country’s President Vladimir Zelensky not to hold elections raises questions. “The current leadership of Ukraine has decided not to go to the polls, which means there are questions. There is Article 103 of the Constitution of Ukraine, it states that the president is elected for only five years,” he said.
