On Martha’s Vineyard, the Massachusetts island known for its vacation and retirement homes for politicians and celebrities, residents are facing a shortage in the supply of marijuana. The last open dispensary, which has products to operate only through September, serves the 230 medical cannabis users, plus recreational users. The supply problem comes from a legal vacuum. Although marijuana is legal in the State, it is illegal to transport it across the ocean, so it cannot be imported into the region.
For several years, residents of Marthas’ Vineyard and the neighboring island of Nantucket obtained the plant from a local crop, Fine Fettle. But high costs and reduced demand made the distributor decide to end its cultivation, leaving dispensaries without raw materials. Currently Geoff Rose, owner of one of the cannabis stores forced to close due to lack of marijuana, has sued the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission to try to find a solution to the restrictions.
