Vice Mayor Rakova: 30 Moscow residents with botulism are in intensive care
Moscow authorities commented on the situation with the mass poisoning of citizens. Deputy Mayor of the capital for social development Anastasia Rakova said that currently 121 people have applied to medical institutions with symptoms of botulism.
According to her, 55 of them are in serious condition, 30 are in intensive care.
Rakova emphasized that all victims undergo the necessary examinations and are under constant medical supervision. “Thanks to the timely request for medical help, the measures taken in this regard, and the control by doctors, there is no threat to the lives of these patients,” she said.
The vice-mayor also explained that botulism is an infectious disease that is not transmitted from person to person, but occurs when eating foods containing the causative agent of botulism. The incubation period can range from several hours to five days from the moment of food consumption.
All victims ate store-bought salads
The poisoning of townspeople was reported on June 15. At the same time, Rospotrebnadzor suspended the sale of ready-made salads from two manufacturers. All affected townspeople ate these products.
On the same day, the Investigative Committee of Russia opened a case into the mass poisoning of residents of the capital. At that time, ten people were listed as injured. Searches were carried out in places where products were sold that had previously caused poisoning. As a result, law enforcement officers discovered products of interest to the investigation. It was noted that the company’s employees tried to get rid of it. Documents, electronic media and equipment were also seized.
Doctors warned of possible death from the disease

According to her, the toxin that affects humans can be contained both in the food itself and in bacterial spores that begin to multiply in the intestines. In this case, spores can persist even when processing dishes.
Therapist, candidate of medical sciences Alexey Khukhrev, in turn, emphasized that botulism can be fatal if severely intoxicated. According to him, everything depends on the dose of botulinum toxin.
Botulinum toxin is the same thing used in Botox. It paralyzes the muscles, resulting in impaired swallowing, impaired breathing, paralysis, and death. In fact, a person dies from the inability to breathe, suffocates with normal lungs
At the same time, Baranova notes that the mortality rate of botulism is not so high and with proper treatment, about 90 percent of patients recover – it all depends on how much toxin entered the body and how well the treatment was carried out.
