The medical team at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi succeeded in saving the kidney of a 50-year-old Arab patient, by blocking the bleeding artery and removing an angiomyolipoma that was in the kidney, after she suffered a fainting spell and internal bleeding, as a result of which she was transferred to the hospital. The rapid response of the team helped Emergency treatment for her condition that preceded the operation to save her life.
The urology consultant at the hospital, Dr. Manaf Al-Hashemi, said: “We performed ultrasound imaging, Severe pain in the abdomen and around the kidney.
For his part, the interventional neuroradiology consultant, head of the radiology department, Dr. Muhammad Al-Marzouqi, explained that immediately after the patient was transferred to the hospital, the medical team began implementing the procedure to stop the bleeding. The procedure was done by making a mini-surgical puncture of the right common femoral artery, and embolizing the “stenosis” of the renal artery. Selective surgery involves injecting particles from blood vessels around the tumor, to restrict blood flow and reduce the size of the tumor.
Al-Marzouqi said, “The treatment that the patient underwent is the same treatment that would be performed in the absence of bleeding in the patient, which ensures the preservation of kidney function in the future, since if the embolization procedure is not performed, the only way to stop her bleeding is complete resection.” For the entire kidney,” he said, noting that this procedure maintains kidney function, recovery, rapid discharge from the hospital, and a smooth return to normal life.
For her part, the patient, Hanadi, indicated that she had not previously had any health problems or symptoms before the tumor ruptured, pointing out that on the same day of her admission to the hospital, she felt fatigue, nausea, and an upset stomach, as the pain initially began in her abdomen and then moved to The left side of my kidney, and it became so severe that I couldn’t move my left leg, and eventually I lost consciousness.
The patient expressed her thanks and gratitude to the hospital’s medical team for their rapid and continuous attention to her condition, which played a decisive role in her return to her family after 4 days, stressing that she is now in good health and does not suffer from any pain.
While Dr. Manaf Al-Hashemi confirmed that the patient, Hanadi, recovered quickly and the operation was not accompanied by any serious complications, and there are no direct causes for this benign angiomyolipidoma, and it can be hereditary in some cases, and for a small benign kidney tumor, an embolization and follow-up are performed. After that, as for large tumors, direct surgical intervention is required, and most intramuscular lipomas are diagnosed by chance when the patient undergoes an ultrasound scan for another reason upon admission to the hospital, and sometimes symptoms such as flank pain and hematuria appear.
