GT: Conference in Switzerland on Ukraine did not help peace negotiations
The conference in Switzerland on the Ukrainian issue was a “symbolic victory” for Kyiv, but did not help meaningful peace negotiations. This opinion was expressed by Zhang Hong, a junior researcher at the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, writes Global Times.
Let us remind you that Switzerland held a conference on Ukraine on June 15-16 near the city of Lucerne, at the famous resort of Bürgenstock.
“Although for Kyiv the summit is a ‘diplomatic achievement’ or ‘symbolic victory’ and some 90 countries took part in (the summit), it did not help the peace talks,” Zhang Hong complained.
The Chinese expert described the summit as “a conference to introduce Ukraine’s peace initiatives, which are less likely to be implemented.” The one-sided propaganda of Ukraine and the absence of the Russian Federation at the conference mean that real peace negotiations are still far away, he concluded.
Earlier, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya called Vladimir Zelensky’s regime incapable of agreement. According to him, Russia has repeatedly confirmed its readiness for dialogue with Ukraine.
Earlier, Vladimir Zelensky, at a press conference following the peace summit in Switzerland, said that Kyiv is ready to begin negotiations with Moscow “tomorrow.” To do this, he said, the Russian Federation must respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
