The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul reported this Sunday (June 16, 2024) that a “microexplosion” hit São Luiz Gonzaga, a city in the northwest of the state. The meteorological phenomenon occurs when the cloud cannot support the amount of water and “dump” a lot of rain in a short time.
The storm hit the city of 34.7 thousand inhabitants on Saturday (June 15), around 10:30 pm.
According to the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul, a 73-year-old man was injured while trying to put tarpaulins in his home. He was taken to the hospital by the Fire Department. The victim’s condition was not disclosed.
São Luiz Gonzaga City Hall stated that 15 thousand people were directly affected by the stormwhich had around 15 intense seconds of hail, very strong winds and torrential rain.
Around 1,200 houses, 4 schools, 2 health centers, the Municipal Health Department building, the Archaeological Museum and commercial establishments were destroyed by strong winds and hail.
The mayor of the municipality of Rio Grande do Sul, Sydney Brondani (PP), declared a state of emergency in the city due to the weather.
“We have been assisting everyone who requested tarpaulins and other types of assistance since last night. The situation is serious and affects almost half of our municipality, with a lot of disruption and damage to schools, health units, homes and businesses. It was something similar to a cyclone that hit us, but everything that had to be done so far has been done.”declared Brondani.

Microexplosion
According to Civil Defense, the “microexplosion” was the result of a “intense instability associated with a stationary cold front, together with the flow of moisture from the north of the country”.
According to the corporation, when the cloud becomes too heavy, it dumps all the accumulated water towards the ground. The process causes a lot of precipitation in a short time, and is usually accompanied by gusts of wind that can reach 150km per hour.
