Arrested by Lava Jato and released in 2019, João Vaccari Neto is working on appointments to relevant positions at the state-owned company
João Vaccari Neto, former treasurer of the PT, once again had influence on Petrobras. Imprisoned for 4 years by Operation Lava Jato, he participated in the selection of nominees for relevant positions at the state-owned company.
The information was published by journalist Lauro Jardim and confirmed by Power360.
Pedro Barusco, former services manager at Petrobras, said in a plea bargain that Vaccari Neto had received bribes on behalf of the PT in the corruption scheme at the state-owned company. The former PT treasurer was preventively arrested in April 2015 in the 12th stage of Operation Lava Jato. He was convicted of passive corruption and remained in prison until 2019, when he was released to serve his sentence in a semi-open regime, wearing an electronic ankle bracelet.
In January 2024, Vaccari Neto had his conviction annulled by Minister Edson Fachin, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court).
Vaccari Neto is 65 years old. He was born in Paraná, but moved to São Paulo as a child. Son of farmers, he had been active in the trade union movement since he was 18 and, in 1983, participated in the founding of CUT (Central Única dos Trabalhadores), as well as the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
Vaccari Neto joined the former Banespa (Bank of the State of São Paulo) in 1978, as a clerk. He became president of Union of Bank Workers and Financial Workers of São Paulo, Osasco and Region from 2000 to 2005. He was also president of Bancoop (São Paulo Bank Workers’ Housing Cooperative) from 2004 to 2010.
The former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) mocked the involvement of the former PT treasurer in Petrobras. “Love returned without any shame of being happy!”, he declared.
